What's wrong with your water? Is it poisonous? Flammable? Radioactive? Do your faucets occasionally run red with blood? Is your kitchen tap home to clusters of parasite eggs that, left unchecked, will burrow into your soft membranous tissues and leave you teeming with fungus or disease? Are your pipes made of lead or cobalt? Is your loft in a plant ( Read more... )

There is one thing you are overlooking in your anti-organic argument. I too, generally consider organic foods a bit more of a fad than anything else. However, I do like to only eat meat about two times a month, max, for quite a few reasons, much of which has to do with the sustainability of our diets. Unless you buy frozen food in the organic section (or buy cheese pizza), try finding a meatless, frozen entree. There is one non-organic food-maker that I've found that does that, Healthy Choices, or something like that.
Also, as for the water, I used to live in Baltimore. While Baltimore water is perfectly healthy to drink, it tastes like a volcano's ass-crack. Putting it through a brita filter meant we didn't need to go out and purchase water most of the time. Next time you're in Baltimore, drink the tap-water for a week, and tell me you wouldn't do the same thing.

The main point in my organics tirade was that there's no established benefit, and I'm irked when it's misrepresented as such. If people have the money to spend and/or the desire to feel morally superior, they can by all means justify eating organic. As to if their superiority has any validity, I argue not.

In regards to water, I admit the point- there's some funky water out there. But for all the current indicators, fifty years from now people will fight wars over potable water. If such a dystopia were to occur, I know I'd feel rather dickish for being picky when it was plentiful.

How's tricks, Tracy? You're one of about five people I ever see on the old friends-page anymore.

Reasonably good. I too, rarely see people on here these days. I've decided to use the journal mostly to chronicle my attempts at writing something, as poor as my prose may be ( ... )

Also, I just had to cut 150 characters out of my response because it was too long. Lols at me.

Fairbanks well water: not potable
UAF water: not potable
But yeah, usually there's no cause to buy water.

I argue potable v. palatable. I grew up drinking well water, and miss the taste of delicious delicious iron.

My last place had arsenic in the water. Taste wasn't really the issue.

Entirely valid, but that constitutes an unfortunate incident- not necessarily indicative of a trend. The point is if there's something legitimately wrong with the water then by all means, deal with it.
