Multiple desktops?

Sep 21, 2005 14:24

It will surprise nobody that my desktop is messy. I mean the desktop of my Windows machine, that is. I like to keep all the elements of current projects on my desktop so I don't have to go hunting for them. So I'm wondering, is there an application out there for Win XP that will let me make several desktops and easily switch between them like I ( Read more... )

um, "yes."

By which I mean to say, yes, I know it's been done, but no idea...exactly how.

Suggestions:
* search forums on annoyances.org
* google search: "explorer replacement" (adding "xp" optional)
* google search: "virtual desktop (windows OR xp)" (adding "download" optional)
* tucows, download.com
* freshmeat.net, sf.net

...of course, if anyone else has something more specific, try what they said first. :-)

*nod* I could definitely have two different logins.

But I want to be able to switch between them instantly (basically I want lots more desktop real estate)

Yep, it's probably different network drives.

I'm talking about distinct desktops on one machine. You can sort of do it for applications with Microsoft's deskman powertoy, which is cool. but the actual *desktop* (icons) stays the same with that one while applications only are visible/open in the desktop you opened them in.

I'll definitely let you know if I do find one. No luck so far, though. :(

*grin* and *smoochback* me too, actually. Says I'm locked out and I do the login thing they say to do to fix it and it stays locked out. Weird.

just popping thru, seen you around a few times....

scroll down to "virtual desktop manager" this allows you to run 4 desktops ala kde or gnome. I use it for app dev since they won't spring for a multimonitor setup at work

Thanks! Actually I downloaded and am using that, and it's great for keeping my screen real estate less cluttered. I thought that one of the linux variants also kept the desktop *icons* separate, but perhaps that was my imagination :)

in linux you can "pin" (the icon in the app looks like one) apps to one desktop or have it appear on all of them, but it still gets the "desktop" from the same folder for each one so the icon set doesn't change.

I keep trying to explain to my boss why I need twin or triple 21" monitors for work, but he thinks I just want something that looks like it's from the "Matrix"
