What next?

OK, we lost the damn election. Dammit. So having been cranky this week I'm wondering what's next. geeksdoitbetter has some excellent points, and so does yesthattomSo my current theory is that I should choose something to work on to counteract the tiniest bit of the social damage *them* being in control of the executive and the legislative branches (can't face the ( Read more... )

I knew them when they were coordinating the Brown bi student group, before they created ATMP. :-P

They're cool, good people. Good stuff that they do. I think the best thing to do for for them is to work on press, research, outreach, that sort of thing -- I'm not sure that money is what they need the most right now (although, of course, they could probably use some).

Oh, and she's really cute. And my folks were interviewed by them for their book. (They're not married, my ma's totally blase about it.)

*grin* that sounds like a wonderful combination of things. I'm leaning even further towards making AtMP a focus, with your and geeksdoitbetter's comments.

I've gotten to do one wedding so far, and it was a same-sex couple. I plan to marry GLBTQ folks every chance I get, as well as encouraging every UU congregation I come into contact with to do the Welcoming Congregation Program, a GLBTQ curriculum and certification process.

If and when I get ordained, I'd like explore ways to get ministers to organize to argue that marriage is a religious institution, and the government has no right to legislate who is and is not married; that right properly belongs to ministers and congregations. Government should only be able to legislate civil unions, and I think there's a good chance that the Supreme Court might rule that they can't discriminate in that area under the precedent of Brown v. Board of Education.

You know, not that I'm trying to push, but I think having people like you as ordained religious figures has a lot of value. Fighting the idea that all ministers are one the other side is a crucial statement.

I felt this too marching with the UU's at the March for Womens' Lives--that it was really useful to show the media (and there was media coverage on this as lame as the media coverage was generally) that there are religious folk ready to stand up on the pro-choice side as well as the pro life side.

on the completely unrelated causes, around here, public television/radio funding has been hit so hard that it's the one thing we make sure we have money for (everyone else is icing). And then it is politically related 'cause Bush would happily shut down NPR if he could ( ... )

*nod* NPR is an awfully good point too.

I was a member of PFAW for several years, and I certainly like their politics. But they really annoyed me with misuse of statistics and rhetoric (and ignored my requests that they fix their errors or at least admit them). Somehow that bothers me even more in a group dedicated to correcting errors on the part of others.

I think I'm settling on the idea of AtMP, what with all the good things folks have said and my impression of how effective they are with the small staff and budget they have.

*smile* let's hope the victory sticks, though! I didn't know that RI was thinking of joining in. That's a lovely thing to know with all the initiatives this past election. *sigh*
