Thank you for expressing exactly why I hated the early episodes of Community. Everyone was a caricature. I did the same thing you did with Britta - annoyance to love at her dorkiness and how she can never seem to win the appreciation of the group. I just love how this show develops its characters.
Wow, this is a wonderful essay you've written here, and one that I can relate to so well. I was the same as you, disliking Britta a lot in the beginning, but by the time I was done with the second season, she was one of my favorite characters. And for all of the reasons you've mentioned! With quite a few things that I didn't catch as well of course.
Thanks for writing and sharing this C: Again, awesome essay, seriously <3
Very much approve of this essay. I would never say I hated Britta but the first half of season 1 did little to endear her to me. And you pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as she's concerned.
Virtually all of the characters have evolved into much more entertaining, relatable people but I think Britta's evolution is by far the greatest. I really hope they keep her on track for the next season
I heart Britta too and also don't really understand the assumption that if one a loves Annie, he/she must also hate Britta. (I suspect this has to do with Jeff and the trio's kinda/but whatever love triangle.) Both characters are great. In fact, there isn't really any characters on this show that I dislike. And, it's because I find that I can relate to several of them. For example, I personally believe I'm a combination of Annie, Britta and Abed. I can say this about any other show.
Anyways, I think Harmon did a fantastic job of turning around the character of Britta. At first, I was all set to dislike her because the writers were clearly trying too hard with her. But then they did a great thing that and made that one of her major character flaws. Now, it's hilarious to watch her flail when she's trying too hard at anything: Being environmental, cool, rebellious, sexy, etc. LOL, oh Britta... ;)
