at last count, i've attended 34 or so conferences since i've become an academic, 7 years ago. if there is one thing i've learned, it's that you cannot count on good coffee at a hotel.

having suffered through numerous half-awake conference mornings, i decided to do the paranoid thing this time:

Until recently, TX coffee options were dismal, so I always brought some coffee with me from my favorite Rochester, NY roaster. I didn't use a glass jar, so I smelled like coffee for most of the Christmas holidays!

i also like visiting new coffeehouses; the problem is that hotels in which i stay are generally found on the outskirts of town, perhaps near shopping malls and department stores ..

.. and so those fine little indie cafes are nowhere to be found.
