Gah, these bloody caterpillars are seriously testing my kill-no-animals vegetarian resolve. They are absolutely massacring my cabbages, most of which have leaves that are more hole than leaf now. Bloody things ( Read more... )

Argh, I so feel your pain!

Have you tried putting fine-mesh net curtains over the cabbs? I've had a little bit of success with that. several people have recommended coffee grounds to me re: molluscs (may work for crawling caterpillars) , but they will make the soil slightly more acidic, don't know if that's good.

I don't eat enough eggs to use the eggshells technique!

I've started collecting the critters in a bucket and taking it away every couple of days to dump in the field next to the station, so the little buggers can't find their way back. Only trouble, I keep forgetting and worrying I'll kill the snails through starvation and boredom!

I have to admit that we have completely lost patience and Jim now has at them with a badminton racquet. It has been decided that we won't grow brassicas again because it's just too much trauma.

I've solved this problem by having everything already bitten back to ground level by grazing wallabies. Caterpillars and snails aren't a problem now.
