Control is key

All of the conditions were right for a nice long run this evening. The temp was mid-sixties, the rain had stopped and I had the track all alone. Unfortunately I started out too fast again and by the end of the first mile I was flagging. Walked a few laps during the next couple of miles and finally slogged out a total of 5.5 miles.

I tend to run too fast to start out. I finally gave up and decided to run like hell for a few minutes, then walk. Rinse, repeat and then slow jog the last mile. I tried it tonight, I only did 2 miles because I'm not completely over the effects of my migraine yesterday, but it went much better than my attempts to do the long, slow run. I'll just have to work on the endurance.

I used to do that, till I got zen about running. It probably helps that I don't run on a track. I hate running on a track. Bo-ring! The clincher was when a friend paced me in a 4 mile race last New Years. After I wore myself trying to keep up with the main pack, she simply told me to back off some, kept me jogging but much slower. Once my heart rate evened out, she explained that if I started out feeling like it was easy, I'd be ok.

Now, I start a run and I'm very zen about it. I just kinda get into my groove, let the initial heart rate jack pass and go. It usually takes about 10 minutes for everything to even out, my legs to warm up and everything get smooth.

So, it sounds to me like you need to learn zen and the art of running:D
