She means well

I was out with my mom and grandma last week, and we were having a somewhat unhealthy breakfast out. I chose french toast and some bacon, knowing that I had plenty of points and a pretty lean dinner planned. I was well-within my points allotment for the day (according to Weight Watchers, to which I belong). At the time, I had about 8 pounds to go ( Read more... )

First, CONGRATS on the terrific success. As you know, I too am a big WW believer [40 pounds down after almost three years].

As for your mom's comments--well, just chalk them up to stupid things Moms say. Or to latent jealousy that you've succeeded where she either hasn't, won't and/or can't. [And that last sentence is not meant in any sort of judgmental way and I almost erased it, but I have seen that dynamic at play over the years in my family on similar type topics].

Good luck on getting to life membership.

Thanks! No, you're right. I feel for my mom; I know she wishes to lose weight. She's actually pretty active -- more so than many women her age -- and struggles with some back problems that make physical activity painful at times. I just think she needs to address her eating habits. She never has -- she just eats the same way she always has. She never struggled with her weight until her later 30s, and so I wonder if that doesn't have something to do with it.

Anyway, thanks so much! I'm really excited about making my goal soon.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree, there is the faintest bit of competition there. In the past, when we've had our disagreements, she's accused me of "thinking I'm so smart" and "better" than her, which is absolutely not true. My mother gave me so much valuable advice (a lot of which I wish now I'd followed) and I respect and admire her for all that she is. Sometimes, though, I wish she'd just be happy and excited about my successes and not act like it is somehow threatening to her.

Congrats on the marathon! I've always admired runners. Running is something I'd love to love, but sadly, dislike most intensely :)
