“I … I set it free. When I was little, still at Whitwell. I thought it would like to run free with the rest of the herd instead of being cooped up in my room

Awwwww! And what a lovely, bittersweet story about Balin. That dear Dwarfie.

I just loved Jackie's idea about the sheep--they *are* adorable, aren't they? She was very clever with that!

Yes. You know, Frodo's reaction and words in Moria about Balin seem to hint that he might have once met the old Dwarf. A careful examination of the Tale of Years indicates that the only opportunity for that to occur was the year Frodo was adopted by Bilbo. So I sort of brought the two things together in "A Place for Gandalf". We thought it would be neat to expand a little on that.

"Mr. Frodo ‘baaing’ like his black-faced sheep. Merry had a little lamb. And little lad Pip had lost his sheep and didn’t know where to find it." "Perry-the-Winkle."

LOL -- I love all the little puns and references you have managed to get into this chapter, and how well it continues with the universe of dreamflower's other stories, too (sorry; I don't know gryffinjack's universe well enough to pinpoint it) with Pippin's rolling his cheese into balls and the part about how he is still learning about married hobbit life while he's courting Diamond.

Also: a 4 1/2 and a 4 3/4-pounder: I have admiration for Bell Gamgee.

Both the sheep story and "Perry-the-Winkle" were Jackie's ideas and I love the way they came out.

We decided for a number of reasons to keep this story within my Shire universe. But I'm glad you are spotting some of the less obvious things.

Yes--for hobbit babies, that is *very* large indeed!! LOL!

This was a delight to read. You made me laugh and then you made me cry and then laugh again. Thank you both for that.

It was wonderful to be reminded of the *Tickle fights* I had as a child.

*wanders off planning on giving hubby a Tickle Fight* :-D

I'm so pleased with your reaction! That's the way we are wanting Sam, Merry and Pippin to feel, both joy and sorrow, as they deal with all these things together.

Memories are lovely things.

And I am quite sure the hubby will enjoy his "tickle fight". *grin*

Yes, each of them are learning things about Frodo and about one another that they did not know before.

Pippin's a fond "uncle", and I'm sure does his share with the children, but having to deal with little Perry all by himself was an education! Well, it's only a couple of more years until he and Diamond can marry!

There's so much to love here!

“She said he used to carry it around with him wherever he went and would say ‘baa,’ as if he were a sheep,” said Merry.

OMG, I can totally visualize this and it's hysterical! Baahhh!

"Mr. Frodo ‘baaing’ like his black-faced sheep. Merry had a little lamb. And little lad Pip had lost his sheep and didn’t know where to find it. They all had wool in their heads. It was enough to make Sam glad he was born a Gamgee. "

It really had to be done, didn't it? You clever lasses! *huge grin*

“Glory! That smells like Rosie’s coney stew!”

*looks up when Sam calls her name, smells appreciatvely and dashes toward the kitchen*

I must admit, I had entirely too much fun coming up with the puns in the sheep snippet. dreamflower02 was most kind in allowing me to indulge my warped sense of humour by writing something so wicked. lol!

With hungry hobbits around, you'd better hurry up if you want some of Rosie's coney stew!

BTW - did you miss chapter 3? I've enjoyed your comments on all of the other chapters, but that one and want to make sure you read that one as well.

I did read chapter 3. Hmmm, I must've taken a potty break and forgot to comment *g*

I am a fan of both clever puns and warped humor, so keep it up! *claps*
