I keep thinking that I might invest is gold. As in a chunk of gold...

I don't know if you're joking or what, but I buy gold for pennies on the dollar at estate sales all the time.

How do you check if it's a real, and how pure?

I guess you kinda have to just "know". My parents were antique dealers for 20 years so I just kind of learned over time. Anything that says "GF", for example, is only gold filled and not what you're looking for. Real gold is going to be marked 10K (9K if it's from the UK), 14K, 18K (probably only in fine pieces of jewelry) or 24K (pretty rare). You also have to learn what brands are costume jewelry (Trifari, Kramer, Warner, Swank for men's pieces) so you don't misread a mark. I think men's stuff is one of the best places to find mis-sorted pieces because you'll get a bunch of Swank tie clips and someone won't notice the real gold one thrown in and you can get it for a steal (I usually offer to by all the tie clips if I'm at a sale so they don't get suspicious). Also, sometimes people are so hard up they'll sell it to you even though they know it's gold ( ... )

I love and love to hate Suze Orman. When I was in debt and knowingly spending irresponsibly, I couldn't bear to watch her (because she as always right!) but, even now, with our finances in order, I am embarrassed for all the people she rejects on purchases! I have material wants that I can't afford; fortunately, I have a husband who keeps me in line. I know that isn't very feminist-leaning but I think it's good to have one person who's good with money in a relationship if the other isn't. :-P

I know what you mean. I love watching her show when at someone's house, but I don't particularly like the part of the show where she denies people. She seems a bit too strict. The people will have big income, and savings, and I can't understand why they can't afford the $500 purchase. "Wha?!?"
