I knew Renly's death was coming (my brother warned me in advance since he knows how upset I get about characters) but still hated seeing it. He was a likable sort--and would've made a far better king than Stannis. It was a well done scene, though, and was effective from a shock perspective. GoT pulls no punches.
Renly had already become one of my favorite characters, sof course they killed him. When I spoiled myself about his death, I was actually looking to confirm that he didn't die since my favorites are always the ones that get killed off. That soured the whole episode. I'm watching the rest of the episode now, but Renly's death is there in the back of my mind. The irony is that, except fof that, this is the most enjoyable episode for me. I really wish they hadn't made that the first scene.
I understand why they chose that for the opening. It was powerful and set the tone for the rest of the show. But it was hard to take and I almost wished we could've just not been shown it. Fade to black sort of thing. Renly was definitely one of my favorites.
To be fair, some of the bad guys die too, later on. (I won't say which to avoid spoilers.) But it's not a black/white world, so sometimes it's hard to point out who the "bad" and "good" guys are. Some of the "good" guys go on to be successful (at least, as of book 5). However, be forewarned, a few more "good" guys are going to die soon.
That said, this season has been a bit on the slow side. It picked up slightly on the 3rd episode and then kinda died down a bit last night after Renly's death. I'm hoping Brienne's storyline will give it a bit of life soon, and of course, Tyrion and Arya have some cool storylines coming up too.
Oh, yay. Well, I checked up on Tyrion and Daenerys, so I know it's not them, which is excellent. I guess I'll just have to brace myself.
Actually, except for Renly's death, this was my favorite episode so far. I think taking a break before finishing the episode really helped. I am liking Brienne's story so far and more Tyrion and Arya storylines are always welcome.
Haha, here I am trying not to give anything away and you've already spoiled yourself silly. :-P
I was never too attached to Renly. He never had his own point of view in the books, so it's harder to relate to a character you just know about through other characters' points of view. In the larger scheme of things, he was even less important than Ned Stark (who did actually have POV chapters) was. I've gotten the feeling that even Stannis isn't that important... it's more about Melissandre and her Red God when it comes to them. This story is more about Daenerys, I think, although her storylines are so freaking slow moving, it's hard to see it at first.
I like reading your posts about GoT, btw! I don't frequent any tv show forums because I don't want to be tempted to give away spoilers, so I don't know how people who haven't read the books react to the show. It's an interesting perspective! They are two very different mediums, so the divergences are usually quite fun.
Thank you! Sometimes I pop by the discussion post on the main LJ comm to see how the people who have read the books react to the changes, which seems to be most people there.
