This is a tale of two noises. The first, a mystery noise, occurred in the wee, small hours of the morning. I had woken up from a few hour's worth of sleep, and was online, with the front door wide open to let in the cool night air

Your 'noise in the woods' story made me think of scenes from scary movies. You know, the ones where you yell at the screen, "CLOSE THE DOOR!" and "RUN AWAY!" and instead the person goes to check on the scary sound and then all hell breaks loose.
I don't think I could live near bears. I'm a scaredy cat.
Strangely, for a girl who grew up in the suburbs on Long Island, it doesn't rattle me in the least. I really have a being Part Of The Web Of Life attitude.
Most animals won't bother you unless they feel threatened by you. Or want to eat you. Cause they're hungry. But these woods and hills are teeming with wildlife and game, and there is plenty of yummy vegetation around to keep everyone well fed.

I'm a total chicken of this kind of stuff, and not the least bit ashamed to admit it. I've lived on farms, lived in the country, lived in the city, etc...and am used to noises, however if I hear one I can't identify that sends me into bonker mode. Hopefully it was just a creature that was checking out your hood. I'm cool with that kind of game creeping into my hood, just no bats please. (moi can not do bats under any circumstances) Bears are realtively easy, for the most part and can be diverted without any violence being necessary. Same with deer, goats, and bull headed bulls. Oops did I just mention my O men in the last part? ;)

Bleh...didn't faze me. I was safe indoors, and so were all my pets. I figure at nighttime, the wildlife has the run of the world.
HOWEVER... I'm with you on the bat thing. I fearfully co-existed with a bat that had gotten inside the house I was living in a few years ago, for a period of three days. I was NOT a happy camper.
