Reception for Kirk-Pike wedding [open to EVERYONE]

Jul 27, 2010 20:54

The ceremony had been beautiful, and a perfect way to open the new recreation area on board the Enterprise. It felt strange calling it a bar, since it opened up to a huge observation desk, stars floating in the distance as music played from a five-piece band, hastily tossed together from volunteers ( Read more... )

Hank counted off the beat for the first song. He'd missed the wedding because he was part of the band, and they were furiously practicing to not completely suck out loud when the reception started. None of them had played together before but they were making it work so far. They had a lot of pre-recorded music just in case though.

Paula smiled when she saw Hank playing in the band. She remembered him mentioning he'd played, but had no idea he had volunteered for this. Wandering over to a table with her drink and plate of food, she waved as soon as there was a break in the music.

Hank waited until he was at the end of the song and then waved back at her with a smile. She looked absolutely gorgeous.

"Dance with me later?" she mouthed at him, questioning. Paula wasn't sure what the setup was, but was fairly sure they would have recorded music at some point so the band could have a break. She was looking forward to their first real dance.

Paula took a sip of her punch, then ate a chocolate-covered strawberry, looking around and watching everyone enjoy themselves. It looked like the party was off to a good start.

Spock's reaction to that particular cake, which Sybok had not told him of nor hinted at in all the days leading up to this, was rather predictable. It went a bit like this, internally speaking:

Jim grinned as he came into the room, looking over everything. He saw Sybok and Spock eying up the chocolate cake and couldn't help but laugh inside as he saw Spock being diverted away from the table. Oh... that longing look in Spock's eyes.

He gave an evil grin and whispered to Bones, "I'll be back."

He moved over and picked up a plate, specifically swiping a chocolate covered strawberry. Then he moved, sly as a cat, until he was near the more dinner-like food table.

Waited until he caught Spock's eye, just for a moment. Then he made oral love to that chocolate covered strawberry.

"Now that's a little cruel, isn't it, captain?" Sybok said from behind Jim, his own voice low. "If I were a better brother I'd get you within arm's length of him."

Spock was glaring at them both. And then pointedly getting some cheese.

Jim's head tilted, giving partial attention to Sybok. He smiled when he heard the words. "Oh? Why's that? I'm just eating a strawberry," he turned his head, catching Sybok's eyes before he licked his lips. He hadn't forgotten about what Bones had told him about Sybok inside his mind.

There was cake. Why had no one told John there was cake? He didn't know whose wedding it was; didn't, in fact, care, beyond the fact that it was a wedding, which meant there was cake.

So he was crashing the wedding reception of someone he didn't know. He had been in far worse situations. And the cake looked delicious. John moved to the edge of the dance floor and began dancing, kind of, while waiting for the cake to be cut.

The thing about being telepathic was that you could pick people out of crowds by a variety of signatures; some people stood out given the right environment. He had met or at least been exposed to most of the people in the room, and for the ones he didn't know, he was fixing that gap in knowledge. It was easy to slide in between people, linger as if he had other business, and then suddenly be next to this strange new gentleman.

"Evening." He smiled. "I don't believe we've met."

John turned toward the voice at his side. His eyes slid over the man, observing and noting the small details of his appearance--the pointed ears, identifying him as one of two races; the smile, which was certainly unusual for a Vulcan; and the laugh lines around his eyes, suggesting that the smile was not simply an affectation for the sake of the social gathering, but more of a habit for this man.

"No, indeed," he answered, "I'm sure I'd remember if we had." He held out his hand. "Captain John Hart."

Oh, another person who hadn't take Vulcan culture with Starfleet--or was even Starfleet personnel at all. The jacket wasn't anything he recognized from the databases. Interesting.

"Sybok," He took the man's hand and shook it firmly, skimming what thoughts he could off the top. "So, what niche do you have aboard the Enterprise?"

Bones knew how to dance - he wasn't raised in a barn, and he'd been taught enough steps to not embarrassing himself at functions like this. Right now, as he scooted Paula around the small dance floor, he grinned, hoping he wasn't stepping on her toes.

"In case I didn't mention, you look lovely today," he said, giving them both a little spin.

"Thanks," Paula replied, a bright smile on her face as he led her through the dance. "Not much I could do, considering the dress uniform, but it's nice of you to say." She laughed when he spun them around, clutching at him for support.

"You look quite nice yourself," she told him with a grin.

"This old thing," he grinned, rolling his eyes at himself. They did look rather fetching, as a whole, everyone in their dress uniforms and fancy clothes.

"Your boyfriend still watching us over here?" he teased, peeking over her shoulder to see if security officer was looking their way. "I promise to be good," he leaned in and whispered in her ear.

"Hmm, probably." Paula smiled, taking the teasing in stride. She had discovered over the past few weeks that Hank could be very protective, especially after the away mission. It was... nice, thoguh she wasn't entirely used to having someone looking out for her like that. She looked over her shoulder, smiling at Hank.

Leonard's whisper made her giggle. "Aw, where's the fun in that?"

M'Kriss silently moved into the large room that had been prepared for the celebration. Now this was more like it! It was too loud for her sensitive ears, but with force she kept them from laying back. Instead she moved gracefully between people, watching the strange dancing that the Humans were gyrating together in, and sniffed at the air. Far too many scents of other beings laced with sugar and plant matter. While the occasional vegetable was good for her, due to not being able to consume fresh meals or organs on the ship, too many would have her excusing herself for a restroom.

So instead, she pursued the tables for some sort of meat-substance in hopes of finding something suitable.

"Try the shrimp," Joanna pointed to the deep fried shrimp. "They're pretty good with the cocktail sauce over there."

She looked to the young human beside her and sniffed delicately, testing her scent. Her eyes followed the point, unsure of the strange brown substance on the curled food. "What is shrimp?" Asked politely. It did not smell appetizing.

"It's a crustacean, from the sea on Earth," Jo explained. "It's pretty good. It's been fried though, I'm not sure if you'll like that. Although most the food has been fried, it looks like. Dipped into a batter, put in hot oil and cooked that way. Do you like spicy food?"
