Today is Oprah’s last show.

I saw something on Facebook which ticked me off: Oprah disparagement.  Something about how she propagated “gullibility” and thus unfairly made all of her money. It sort of ticked me off.  Here’s what I nearly posted:

I think Oprah is good at what she does. I think she tries hard to do good things with the money that she's worked so hard to earn. She's brilliant, and I think highly of her. That doesn't mean I want to watch her show, or be part of her book club, or take her ideas as my own.

I saw that statement too, and agree with both sides. However, as much as some of Oprah's viewers may be gullible, they also have had their eyes opened to millions of issues they may otherwise have not had exposure to. That is admirable. And she never tried to completely mind fuck anyone once she had the power.

I am not part of her audience, so I really cannot relate to her shows and some of the issues she addresses. She definitely caters to a particular type of middle class woman, and I do wonder if she leaves behind the African American community at times. (Not everyone can buy four $100 bras every six months!) She also plays the emotional card a little too much for my taste.

But, for the reasons you cite above, she cannot be denied for her intelligence in business, her ability to connect with people on her show and her audiences watching it, and her benefitting people through donations and other work.

I grew up watching her on television. Whenever I can catch her show, I try to. I hate that I've missed the last few shows. But from what I've heard, everyone has been teary-eyed b/c of them. I think she's done a lot of positive things.
