Didn't do much today. Stayed after for SWA: took our picture for the yearbook, and worked on stories for the morning announcements. I was supposed to go to the DMV today... which didn't happen. Next week I hope.

The death penalty. I want your opinion. Go.

Well,

The death penalty isn't a deturrent for murder, because anyone who will murder is usually F-ed up enough not to be thinking about the consequenses. However, if a family member of mine was hurt... I'd probably wanna kill the bastard that did it.

I dunno. That type of person usually cannot be rehabilitated because they have to be extremely messed up to begin with in order to comit such an act of imoral, indecent, inconcievable damage against another human being. So I'm certainly not in favor of adding murderers back to society. But maybe life in prison is better. Of course, it doesnt solve anything, it just provides cheap labor and a place to think about what you've done for the rest of your life. In that case, is the death penalty a relief compared to life sentance?

Death penalty vs. Life in prison. I want your opinion. Go.

Okay.

I am against the death penalty. It has nothing to do with showing them mercy, though. I think that murderers are the lowest sort of people, completely immoral and inhuman. But it has everything to do with keeping ourselves from becoming what we so hate. You can justify and rationalise all you like, but when you get right down to it, the death penalty is murder; and how is that any different from them?

As for a life sentence, by all means, lock the criminals up and throw away the key. They sacrifice their rights the moment they violate someone else's. But it is not our duty or our right to take someone's life.

And yes, prison is expensive. I guess that I think that some things are more important than money.

Everyone makes very valid points, and I definitely understand what you're all saying. I respectfully disagree. =]

Like I said to you I feel the death penalty is a necessary evil. However hipocritical you see it as to take a life of another for taking lives of others, it is unfortunately the most logical solution at hand. Prisoners often or not live in fairly comfortable settings even after committing haenous acts. Those who commit a crime worthy of the death penalty are unable of opperating in soceity, and rarely can any be rehabilitated. Yet still murderers receive 'day passes' and 'work leave,' and you can imagine that some of them run. Its a process we must deal with carefully, but swiftly.

Your idea of the prison these days isn't that difficult. Cell sizes are of the least of problems, and work passes aren't uncommon ( ... )

For those of you who say the death penalty is not a deterrant, you're being ignorant. You cannot use the argument that we have the death penalty and still the most crime in the world; we do not know how much crime we WOULD have without it. Perhaps we would have exponentially more; perhaps the United States is inherently violent. Point being, you cannot compare one society to another in that way...the only way to know for sure that it is or isn't a deterrant would be to remove the death penalty FROM THE US and THEN watch the statistics in action...until then, it's anyone's guess, not a fact ( ... )

Death penalty....eh...in most cases I don't think it should be used. I mean, most people who get the death penalty deserve much worse. I say we should ship those people to a remote part of Alaska in a high security prison where they are isolated from everyone. Most of those people prefer death. So why give it to them?

That's not saying that I don't agree with the death penalty. It serves the purpose and we really do need it for expense reasons. So...yeah...Agreed with everyone else.
