I finished Neverwhere and now I'm lonely for a good book.

Any recommendations?

Terry Pratchett's "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" (He's funny and smart. If you like Gaiman, you'll do well with just about any of Pratchett's metric bazzilion Discworld novels.)

Dianna Wynne Jones' "Dogsbody" (for the dog lover. not the way a dog loves a dog.)

Ursula Le Guin's "Wizard of Earthsea" is a classic young-adult read.

Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" has been on my reading list for must-read smart young-adult lit.

oh so many more! But I'm taking notes of everyone's suggestions too.

Random passerby recommends House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.
