Dianna Wynne Jones' "Dogsbody" (for the dog lover. not the way a dog loves a dog.)
Ursula Le Guin's "Wizard of Earthsea" is a classic young-adult read.
Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" has been on my reading list for must-read smart young-adult lit.
