Talk to me about sandwiches. What is your favorite sandwich?

What makes a good sandwich?

What takes a good sandwich and makes it great?

What's the most unusual/brilliant thing you've ever seen/eaten on a sandwich?

Discuss.

I love a French dip or a turkey sandwich with great cheese & veggies. I also love tuna with a lot of tobasco sauce.

But I also just love good bread, I'll eat it toasted with olive oil when I'm feeling a little lazy. Rosemary, garlic, sourdough and rye are my faves.

I feel like an uncultured slob talking to a chef about sandwiches!

Every bit helps! I know what I like, but it's good to know what other people like, too. I need more variety in my menu then "Meat, meat, lots of meat, meat"

Thanks!

Bread, bread, bread, bread.

No sandwich is better than the bread used to make it.

Mayonnaise and orange rinds is a passable sandwich if the bread is good enough.

Brie & roasted garlic makes a wonderful sandwich (provided the bread is good).

Did I mention bread? You need a real plan for obtaining or baking good bread.

Um. The World's Best Sandwich at the Only is... well, yeah.

Also, I was once fed a quesadilla-y thing with brie & mango slices, and it was spectacularly awesome. Actually, I think the recipe was for brie & mango, but we added kiwi as well.

Also also, I am very very much a fan of the basic tomato-lettuce-cheese with mayo & mustard. This, and fancy variations on it, will win me over every time. When I am feeling fancy at home, I will add sprouts &/or avocado. This, with good bread, is heaven.

And as for greatness in sandwiches: fancy versions of simple ingredients. Fresh, interesting greens instead of romaine. Brie or old old cheddar. A really really good tomato.

And good bread. Fresh and soft, but with enough substance that one doesn't get sandwich innards leaking through.

Um. I am really hungry now.

Hello! I think we have met here before, though, no? I know I have seen you around here, anyway...

I love the World's Best.

I used to eat it about 3 times a week. I can't remember what was on it, though. Red onion, avocado, tomato, gouda, mayo....what else?

Gods I miss sandwiches.
I would just eat plain bread at this point if I was allowed ;)

I love a 'fancy' grilled cheese sandwich. Different cheeses, onions, and of course bacon (or ham).

Are you celiac?

My mum makes really fantastic breads for my stepsister (who can't do gluten). Any interest? You'd need xanthan gum, but the breads turn out pretty good.

I'm pretty sure I'm celiac. Finding a doctor that will get me a diagnosis is proving harder then one would think.

I would like the recipe. Is it for a bread maker, or by hand? We have a bread maker that is collecting a lot of dust :(

Mum uses a bread maker. You could do it by hand if you were so inclined, but bread makers are just so awesome. You dump the ingredients in and a couple hours later you have fresh warm bread.

I'll email her and ash her for her recipes. It's entirely likely that she'll snail mail them to me, though. I'll send them your way when I get them.

I'm going to use the orange zest idea.

I need a sandwich that shares ingredients with my smoked salmon canapee, so it'll be dark rye with smoked salmon, red onion and frizee lettuce, with a citrus zest (orange and lemon) caper and chive creamed cheese. The cream cheese will actually be creamed, with the addition of 35% cream to make it more spreadable.

Thanks!

I love tuna, but the tuna that I would want is too expensive. I have a lobster club already and don't think I have room for two fish/shellfish dishes. Also, sundried tomatoes are a no-no right now. Overused, I guess.

Which sucks, because I love them.

My favorite tuna salad has granny smith apple in it. Sounds weird, but try it. It's amazing.
