Dear Fellow Cyclists,

My shins are covered in scrapes and bruises from contantly bashing myself against my pedals. I (more often then not) have a giant chain greasemark across my calf. Is this normal or am I just a spectacularly uncoordinated biker?

Gwen

Is your seat positioned alright? Is it high enough? Mine's quite high and I never have that problem, but Nathan's is quite low and he always has chain grease on his pants.

Yeah, adjust your seat. I can't find a high enough seat so this happens to me.

Also, blame drivers.

You(se) are probably right. I think I could hike the seat up a little bit.

Thanks!

grease marks are normal. i don't think i own a single pair of un-greasy jeans. for me it's on my ankle.

i find i bang my shins most often when i'm mountain biking, aka stopping suddenly and putting my legs down, or turning suddenly and slipping.
on normal street riding, not so much with the banged shins. i think you're on your own there, clumsy. 8P

I only band my shins when I'm riding XC and slip on an uphill or something.
You could try getting some clipless pedals and cleated shoes, but they take some getting used to!

the pant-tucking is a good way to roll. cleaning your chain will make it less likely to grease up all your possessions (as has happened to some of us)

as for the bruising, i've found that a nice matt of hair does wonders.
