The local news keeps telling me of churches and other organizations that are collecting food, medical supplies and clothes to send to Haiti. My question: How are you going to get the stuff there, and what are they supposed to do with it if it arrives

Yep! It's a great idea in theory, but in practice... just what you said, it's an awful idea.

Yeah, if you want to donate food, donate to local causes-- sometimes the everyday charities suffer when there's a big disaster like the earthquake.
