Warning: my first angst...
‘It’s been a month since then.
A month since I saw my two best friends trying to calm my little brother.
A month since I saw the love of my life cried at my confession.
A month since I died.
But I’m lonely. I just have to see them again.’
Yuto thought it was really strange walking through Horikoshi Gakuen with no one recognizing-heck-seeing him.
When he first saw Shougo and Kamiki, he had shouted a ‘good morning!’ at them but they just passed through him.
And then he saw them, Ryosuke and Mirai.
They haven’t really changed. Mirai had her hair in pigtails and on his right, a little away, was Ryosuke, yawning.
He didn’t know what he expected but he felt lonelier at the sight of them.
“Okay, I’ll go buy bread with you.” Yuto heard Mirai saying to Ryosuke.
“There’s no need to. I’ll go alone.”
Yuto followed them through the day. It wasn’t much of ‘following’ since they were in class, but he stayed beside them.
During lunch time, they ate together just like how it always was. But Yuto knew something was wrong. They were talking and laughing like normal but they were away from each other.
It was the same when they walked. They were at least a foot apart.
‘Is this because of me? Because Mirai saw that video? I can’t believe this, I’m so stupid!!’
Even though they couldn’t see him, he felt he have no face to show them anymore, so he left them. He went to the rooftop to think.
He didn’t want this to happen. He wants them to be happy together. He loves Mirai but he knows how Mirai loves Ryosuke and how Ryosuke loves her in return.
The sun was now setting. He noticed then that he doesn’t have a shadow.
‘Well, that’s to be expected.’ He thought sadly.
His train of thought was interrupted by a whistle. From the rooftop, he looked down to the field and saw the track and field club concluding their practice.
‘Come to think of it, I missed going to those practices, too.’ He smiled forlornly.
He went downstairs intending to go back but then he saw that their classroom was still open.
He went inside and saw Ryosuke and Mirai by the windows.
‘They’re still here?’
“All right then, now that the track and field club’s practice is over, I guess it’s time for us to go home, too.” Mirai said.
And Yuto realized what was going on.
“I really don’t feel like going home before the track and field club’s practice ends after all.” Ryosuke said.
“We are so hopeless. It’s already been a month since then.” Ryosuke continued, still gazing outside.
“Yeah, somehow we just wait without really thinking.” Mirai said, leaning on the window. “The time together with Yuto-kun was too long.”
‘I was in the track and field club.’ Yuto thought and he remembered.
“You have club practice so you can’t go home with us?” Mirai ask raising an eyebrow.
“What are you talking about? We’ll wait for you.” Ryosuke said.
‘They’re still waiting for me…’
Yuto didn’t notice his tears falling.
‘I can’t go home with them anymore.’
“Ryo-chan, not again!”
Yuto glance at them and saw Ryosuke tearing up as well.
“It’s your fault, Mirai! Because you said ‘the time wi-with Yuto-kun… so…”
Yuto couldn’t help it. With his tears falling freely, he laughed. He was laughing so hard it was just like those other times they were together.
“If you don’t stop crying, Yuto-kun will laugh at us!” Mirai said, her tears now falling too.
‘Good thing you can’t see me, or you’ll laugh at me too!’
Ryosuke and Mirai were now walking through Horikoshi’s field, Yuto following closely behind.
“Hey Mirai.” Ryosuke called.
“Hmm?”
“I’ve been meaning to ask you this. Are you unconsciously doing this, Mirai?”
Yuto didn’t understand.
“What is it?” Asked Mirai.
“This.” Ryosuke said pointing at the ground between him and Mirai. “This space.”
‘Space?’
“Ah! So you also noticed it. Yeah, unconsciously or maybe naturally.” Mirai answered, apparently understanding.
“Yeah, my body just moves on its own.”
“Yeah, because after all, he has been there all the time.”
‘That’s my space.’ He was always walking between Ryosuke and Mirai, usually holding a camera.
So, like those times, he moved forward taking his place again.
