I'm mildly sad you read it! Now I'll want to read it too, or I won't understand your book v. show criticisms. But I was kind of enjoying it as it's own flawed universe.
I do get certain criticisms even without reading it. 1) It could do with a little more dark. The best episodes have been the dark ones, and you can tell the underlying material is darker. 2) Darken Rahl. He sucks on the show, and definitely needs depth. And 3) the pilot was a bit of a mess and undoubtedly tried to smoosh/change too many unconnected things, which was why it made very little sense at times. (Amazing that it hooked me anyway, you know?)
I also read that the Richard/Kahlan stuff from the books happens in just a few days. I think it definitely works better over a longer period of time. I'll be able to believe *their love defeating the confessor magic* thing better if it's not a few days.
I'm mildly sad you read it! Sorry! It was a confluence of events. I realized that I a) was out of books to read and b) had a very long travel schedule in front of me and c) fantasy has to REALLY suck for me to not read it.
But I was kind of enjoying it as it's own flawed universe. You still can! It was a little strange reading the book to be honest - like AU fanfic only not sucky.
the pilot was a bit of a mess and undoubtedly tried to smoosh/change too many unconnected things, which was why it made very little sense at times. Yeah, the pilot is the most directly true to the book, only a lot of plot elements were reshuffled until they didn't really form a coherent story. Of the later episodes, only Denna and Puppeteer come directly from things that happened in the book and fairly significant parts were changed. Maybe some of the other episodes show up in later books.

Or just in the lacking of the actors' adorable faces? (I really do think the actors are what's selling the 'ship for me. They're so cute! And have such chemistry!)
Part of it is definitely the lack of cute actors. Richard and Kahlan both come across as a bit more forbidding in the book. But there's also just a general lack of cute scenes. Which is really a function of how fast the book needs to move. We go from them meeting to them being in lots and lots of danger to them falling in love to lots of angsting with no room to take a break.
Ooh, the Italian Alps. Awesome. I always end up bringing small libraries with me on trips... I can't sleep on planes, so I just read. Books are heavy, unfortunately.
I was just talking about Hulu and traveling the other day. I think it doesn't work outside the US, sadly, unless you have a VPN, which maybe you do? The bandwidth issues are the other thing, of course.
Books are heavy, unfortunately. They are. I thought that I'd be safe with two ~900 page books, but having finished the first one, I might be in trouble on the way back. Because I was lugging all this ski equipment, I didn't want to go overboard on the book department. I assume that I won't be reading much during the week. But "not much" for me tends to be a couple hundred pages.
I'm pretty much satisfied with where it's at. Me too. The book and the show are just very different creatures in the end.
Also Goodkind seriously went overboard on the Nazi similarities making all the baddies all aryan looking with the blond hair and blue eyes and Rahl was a vegetarian like Hitler and yeah, wow. He really did. The anvils! They hurt me! I agree that his motivation in the books isn't fantastic - I was never really sold on it - but at least Goodkind tried. Darken Rahl in the show is just a very standard villain at the moment.
Oh did you catch all the LOTR stuff in there? That's kind of par for the course for high fantasy novels. Tolkien wrote the damn template after all. At least there aren't any elves or Hobbit-wanna-bes.
But I don't see her as less powerful and less commanding. No, it's more that the idea of a Confessor is somewhat reduced in the show from the book. Kahlan in the book is kinda depressing. I like that she hasn't lost ABSOLUTELY everything yet in the show - it gives them more room to do stuff with her

Okay now you've got me worried with that 'yet' there LOL Cause since she hasn't lost everything she still could... I lived through 9 years of XF it makes me worry about things like that! *L*
