3) It's your best friend's birthday and you promised them that you'd make them a gift rather than buy one. There are only two hours left before you go to their house to celebrate, but you need to make a gift. What do you make, and what materials do you use? To be blunt: from the example I've cited, that's one of the dangers of mixing the underlying parts of a misogynistic culture with religion. Not all of South Asian culture is bad or even infringes on religion, but this is one of the bad things that get mixed with interpretations of religion and it overlooks the ACTUAL functions of what is allowed and what is not allowed.

It's an example of thinking that just because you're male, you can push certain "privileges" over women by default and attempt to warp what Islam actually says for your own benefit.

Sorry; just wanted to get that out there (though for the record my dad isn't a horrible man...he and I don't see eye to eye at times, and we have an odd if not interesting relationship as a whole where both of us can't get along at times. XP)

Oh, for crying out loud. >_< If he knew she did it for practicality, why did he expect you to do the same? I hope that you still keep in touch with your paternal grandmother (or that you did, if she's passed on), as she sounds nicer than your dad ( ... )
