WRT that XKCD, one time I was visiting some friends and they needed to reach me. They were at work, I was in their home. I didn't have a mobile phone at the time, and they assumed I would not answer their home phone. So they logged into the linux box they had set up to control the home stereo system and told it to play every MP3 in the collection at top volume.
Unfortunately, the machine just began playing the most godawfully loud screeching noise rather than actual music, but was also just playing through the local speaker rather than the house system. So I yanked the ethernet cable and called the friends at work. Communication achieved ... albeit through excessively nerdy means.
well, thanks to the Mouse Over text (which i often forget about with XKCD and is sometimes the funniest part), i, too, (re-)learned about the "say" command on OS X
