I wrote a blog post about raising vegan kids. I tried not to be offensive to anyone!

that is such a great post! we're not a vegan family, but we do a lot of vegan meals due to the boys' dairy allergies. I usually just cook a side of some sort of extra protein because they are so active. so about 30% of our diet is entirely vegan. but yeah, I don't understand why people are so up in arms about what you eat. "YOU NEED COW'S MILK" ummm no my kids will actually die from it, so stop with the propoganda.

my immediate family's buddhist and they are pretty vegan as well. they eat a lot of seitan and marinated tofu. :)

Oh yes, "what do you mean, no milk?!" is a question I've had many people ask me with so much anger, like I'm killing my kids. haha

ice cream is usually what brings out people's rage that OH NOES i'm the mean mom who won't give my kids ice cream. i'm like, dude, what does it matter to YOU what *I* eat, you know? We're happy, you should be happy too. Don't push your agenda of milk on us, and we wont' push ours onto you. :P

since greg built his newest website, i keep daydreaming that john robbins will invite us to his home is central california if we're passing through and we'll have some big happy hippie vegan meal with his family. lol.

oh and i linked greg to your post and this is annoying but now he wants me to ask you to link to john robbins' website instead of amazon because greg is interested in getting his new site new links and john makes money from his site, which will be a boon to his family since they lost all their money last year in the ponzi thing. soooooo, if you feel like it... no pressure!

Thumbs up!

Do you have any succinct responses to the "phytoestrogens in soy will turn my son gay" nonsense that is bandied about so frequently (even in forums I'd otherwise characterize as relatively on-point and sane! I've actually seen it mentioned, for example, when breastfeeding advocates are decrying soy formula)? I mean, first of all -- holy gay panic! Why would I be upset if my son was gay? (They're also conflating "feminization"/gynecomastia with gayness. But that's ... a battle for another time and place). And, secondly, what volume of phytoestrogens would one actually have to consume to produce this effect?

Dasan's dad says that crap.

Meanwhile... I am going to get back to drafting my writing samples for the PETA job I applied for ;)

That argument drives me batty, too. The implication that 1) gay is bad and 2) gynecomastia turns you gay is just......flabbergasting. Truly.

I found this article a helpful illumination: "Virtually everything we eat -- grains, beans, nuts, seeds, seed oils, berries, fruits, vegetables, and roots -- contains phytoestrogens." So if they are going to be scared of soy, they might as well be scared of fruits and vegetables too! The article also makes the excellent point that there is a HUGE difference between phytoestrogens in foods and super-concentrated phytoestrogens in medicines. Screw turning gay, seriously, because anything in the world, if concentrated and fed to you in huge quantities, will KILL you.

i love your blog! this post is informative and helpful for people, i think.

have you tried daiya cheese yet? seriously: yum. quesadillas for my first time in 10 years, and i eat them nearly every day now! it is dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, and appears to be mainly tapioca and arrowroot, if i remember correctly. it really has satisfied any remaining desire for cheese, and it melts lovely for pizza, too!

why oh why is america still sucking off the teats of cows. i don't get it. as if our bodies need anything *close* to the ingredients required by calves!

i appreciate your passion and clarity. <3

i love how committed you are to your children's nutrition, it is very inspiring. i don't understand how not giving cow's milk to a child can be controversial but a happy meal is just fine.

soy doesn't agree with me-i agree with the above comment about the amount of estrogen, and how that can make some people (me!) feel awful. but there are so many alternatives to meat and dairy. plant sources are where the most nutrients come from, don't people realize?
