Didn't have insurance throughout my 20s, and the one I got removed through the dental school was such a nightmare experience I never went back for the others. They haven't given me trouble until now, so I haven't bothered.
For a different perspective: I had all four of mine removed when I was 21 and it was not horrible at all. I didn't have general anesthesia (too scary) but I had the laughing gas and I knew what was going on but I just didn't care. Plus it seemed to only take 5 minutes. After I was given percosets but I didn't really need them and didn't like them so I just used ibuprofen and I was fine.
Owie ow. Having had my share of tooth extractions in my day (my mouth is too small, so all four canines and all four wisdom teeth were pulled), I feel your imminent pain. If your insurance covers it then a good oral surgeon is the way to go. That way you can score the really good painkillers. After my wisdom teeth were pulled, I spent a week sitting around all chipmunk-cheeked and playing Super Mario Kart while blitzed on Percocet. It's a pleasant vacation, and since you can only manage to eat rice, ice cream and lukewarm chicken soup, it's fun crash diet too. ;-)

I had all 4 of mine removed at once when I was like 19. It was horrible.
Not to make you all scared or anything.
