I've found myself thinking about Cat Marnell lately. It wasn't my intention, really. I mean, I have written about her before, but I kind of assumed that was it. Anyway, I read a lot of online beauty writing. Like a lot, a lot. So it turned out that I'd actually been reading her beauty writing for possibly ever. I never put two and two together,

There are some major double standards with celebrities and addiction. Peter Doherty is a hero and a poet. Amy Winehouse was a punchline. I actually did feel a bit sad for her because she had a lot of mental health problems. She was a cutter as well as an alcoholic. And the comments people came out with her when she died were horrible, saying she deserved it and she was just another stupid junkie.

This was my first exposure to Cat Marnell's writing. It will also be my last.

She's an insightful writer, and as a former junkie (meth, in my case), I find her oddly relatable. Having said that, I think I'm going to spend the next hour in fetal position. Possibly trembling. I'm not sure yet.

No, not your fault! I knew what the subject matter was. I've dealt with people who gloried in their own trainwrecks before, and it never affected me like that. But then, the people I dealt with weren't the gifted writer Cat is.

She is definitely a very gifted writer, both for the good and the bad.

I feel like a lot of the time, the most colourful examples of trainwreckedness provide the audience with convenient excuses to blame the victim. 'Amy Winehouse? Well, look at how (ahem) vocal she was about not wanting to go to rehab; I guess she got what she wanted. Cat Marnell? Did go to rehab and got all pouty talking about how they sent her there and nothing happened, so clearly that's not going to work for her, so we'd better just leave her to her self-destruction.' I do think that some people are a little too fond of attention; but at the same time, I also think that throwing around labels such as 'attention whore' really helps obscure the fact that some of them are probably really in trouble. (How many people who mock Britney Spears for making awful decisions and acting erratic know that her fame-obsessed mother pushed her into show-business during childhood? If that had happened to me, I'd probably be emotionally stunted as well

It does seem that most people are mostly just amused/disgusted by someone having the gall to be fucked up where they can see. Even the ones where there is a need for attention, I mean, that's a call for some kind of reassurance and feedback.

That said, due to my own withdrawing-y crazy, I am bad at dealing with those extroverted sorts of crazy in others.

I know, eh? When I'm feeling really off, my instinct is to go hide under the bed until that's over. (I tried the couch first, but apparently I don't fit under it. Oh well.)

I'm definitely of the line of thought that if I don't want to be around me, I assume nobody else would, and act accordingly.
