Your Big Boss is oddly...quiet. I do agree that he wouldn't go setting something up until he found the proper players, but your Big Boss's words lack that natural charisma that they do in canon. The man just draws people to him naturally, and even if he's not planning something, he usually has something ~*~epic~*~ (even in dorkery) to say about most subjects.
You're off to a good start, don't get me wrong. But begin to work on how he interacts with others and leaves a piece of himself in every person he meets.
First of all, thank you coming to leave crit here. I'm really shooting in the dark with Big Boss. I have a grand total of four friends who even played MGS and only two played MG2.
His voice is something I've been trying to work on. Which I think is the biggest problem. A major problem I'm having is trying to find a middle ground between his MG2 dialogue and how he is at the end of MGS4. The quietness is me being unsure, again something I'm trying to fix. The charisma issue should be easier to deal with. I knew something was wrong. I just didn't realize it was that. But looking back at a few of his interactions that seems to make sense

The problem with playing Big Boss as an old man is the HUUUUUGE discrepancy in his voice between MG2 and MGS4. Personally I would put more weight on how he speaks in MGS4 and then use MG2 to really fill it in if that makes any sense. You're in an odd position playing him with those two games in mind, but have more confidence and don't be afraid to play around a little. As I said, you're off to a good start so I think that once you just get comfortable playing him, you'll find your niche soon enough.
And nope, that's it from me! You just have to find out who he is within yourself. These things just take time and practice, but I think you'll hit it.
Best of luck and I look forward to seeing more of him! ♥
I think your Big Boss has potential, but from what little I've seen of him, you only have the rough build of a skeleton with nothing of value inside; that is, no character. For a man who was on the verge of death and managed to babble most of his life story and motives before dying, yours isn't exactly talkative. I'm not saying to make him chatty, but at least give him something meaningful to say from time to time. Don't rely on simple statements for your tags because that comes off as boring and like you're trying to push the fact that he's a tortured man of few words. Don't be afraid to play around. He is and will always be mentally unbalanced; MGS4 just showed that he could be at peace with the worst of his flaws.
Okay. I need some clarification on what your specific critiques are. I've already touched on the talkativeness with the above anon. I need you to be more specific on what's missing in his character. Just telling me something is missing isn't very helpful.
While yes, MGS4 did show that. I play him from MG2. He is not at peace yet.
My only nitpick about your Big Boss is his voice seems a bit shaky sometimes. By shaky I don't mean "doesn't sound like Big Boss at all", what I mean is it seems sometimes it seems he fluctuates between being MG2 Big Boss and MGS4 Big Boss in his speech patterns. I've seen it a bit less frequently which is good but reviewing the MG and MG2 scripts might help get it more solid.
WOO! Wait... people aren't supposed to get excited about crit, are they? Fuck. I gotta work on that.
Yes. The voice thing. I've been having huge difficulties there. As I said to an above anon, I think my problem is trying to merge the two canons(i.e. MG-MG2 and MGS4 for how Big Boss should talk.) But given your point of view on this... I may just throw that out the window and go back to good ol' game scripts.
I should quit trying so hard and just stick with the MG-MG2. I do have a way of over complicating things. Anyway, I'll look back over the scripts again. Maybe replay both games again while I'm at it... they are stupidly fun.
Thank you for the input. I really do appreciate it.
I know it seems like it would be easier to try and integrate MGS4 Big Boss into your playing (since he has more lines, longer speeches to give you a better idea of how to handle him and... Wasn't seemingly translated by a chicken with a typewriter) but the difference between the two is like night and day.
In MG2, Big Boss gives off this feeling like he's a very intense man. He's very passionate and driven by his goal, as misguided as it is. In MG and MG2, the thought that "Hey, maybe this isn't what The Boss wants" hasn't really entered his head. With imported squeaking sand and poisonous hamsters, Big Boss has really gone off the deep end, but obviously is charismatic enough to keep the loyalty of his men

Yeah, it seemed like it would be easier. I think the reason I even bothered is that I usually play characters that have VAs or live action actors. It's easier to tell if I got the voice down. But that's why I wanted to play Big Boss from MG2... I wanted a challenge.
He is forever a work in progress. I really do appreciate any feed back I get... I only have a small handful of friends to bounce ideas off of.
I haven't told many people this that aren't part of the RP he's in but, predictably, he's attempting to recreate Outer Heaven. He wants to find a way to exit the city, but he doesn't want to leave. He wants to use the city as the perfect launch pad for an attack on the rest of the world.
Ah! Yes, I haven't seen that. That is a big help. Retconned and dated aside. I am tempted to throw the retconned stuff out the window and go with original canon. Buuuut... that would probably piss everyone off. MGS does not need more wank. Anyway! Oh god, that is helpful. I don't know how I missed it previously. I have several FAQs and game

Um... Thanks? I am putting him somewhere. Well, planning to. Come back and hit me with your best shot when I get him settled in. Seriously.
That's why I turned it on, Anon. It likes to hit on me. Flattering, really.

Other than that, keep up the good work.
