Well, since I'm not a Brit I can't claim a deep understanding of these things, but I was taught that the Puritans took over Parliament and hired Cromwell, and, while he eventually usurped power, along the way, he went through England and Scotland tearing down abbeys and breaking stained glass in churches etc. etc.--hardly the actions of a libertine. There was a definite bias against luxury, frivolity, and ornament--all of which came back with a roar under Charles II.

Do you have a different interpretation? I must admit, my sources are rather old and dim in my memory. . . .
