1 hr practicing. I wish my metronome still worked. Hands ached afterwards, but that was more from the ligaments restretching than bad technique

OK, I'm a little confused. You do the calligraphy after you paint the illumination? My own method is to sketch in the illuminated capitals and figure out the placement of key images, but I usually layout and do the calligraphy first. That way, I can customize the "fillers" at the end of lines.

At the risk of getting booed by the peanut gallery, most of the calligraphy you've seen of mine has been done with no layout or planning ahead of time, and I can usually do most hands after making myself a two-minute ductus to remind myself of the differences. I do fillers if necessary on the fly. On this particular piece I had to do the painting first, because the text is gold on a red background. :> The red background had to go down and dry fully.
I'm more likely to screw up the illumination so I always do that first, and then do calligraphy.
On this piece however, it's one of the hands I actually DO have to do a couple times, because the ascender to minim ratio is 1.5 to 1, with spacing I need to measure out a couple times before I'll have it in my eye. Stupid Italic-y half-breed.
