You're not a mess! You haven't seen what I look like at 7AM in the morning before my morning coffee... phew!

I would have to say it's the obvious... The mirror reminds us to make sure we're presentable to the world. Those who stop for but a moment aren't obsessing, they're so un-obsessed that they otherwise don't think about it. Those who are obsessed, already have a mirror on them.

Kinda echoing what Woody said - if an opportunity arises to adjust something that can be improved on, might as well take it. A mirror just happens to be a quick tool to help us adjust some small physical appearance attributes.

Must be why they're found in the most convenient of locations, like outside of the train station and in work elevators. Can't go into a business meeting with spinach wedged squarely between your two front teeth! :)

People are often quite conscious of their appearance, but I think it's actually the people that aren't obsessed with it that do the quick check when they run into a mirror. Like the others have said, it's a quick remember to make sure you are presentable. Those that are obsessed have already spent tons of time checking themselves out.

I know that when I look in a mirror the things I check over are more like skin imperfections, or the way my hair is falling across my face. Absolutely hate it when zits pop up out of the blue!
