We're eating dinner tonight and Owen says:

Owen was playing chase me, chase me with a little ~2 year old girl at the park today. He runs 10 feet away, turns around and says "you can't catch me!" after which she toddle after him and he flees with squeals of glee.

I had several reminders this week of how to answer the question "Why should we fund something like the LHC? What possible applications can come of it."

On one level, I think fundamental research is worth it for its own sake.

I have sometimes indulged myself in thinking something along these lines: "When I'm older, I won't have trouble adapting to the new technologies that I couldn't even imagine when I was younger. I will remain flexible, like a young person, in adapting to new and different things."
