They're doing the clean cut on the riser pipe with a diamond blade bandsaw right now. It's on the live video feed from the ROVs at this link.

This should give them a clean pipe to connect to. It has the downside that it will increase the rate that oil is going into the gulf.

No great loss. It's about as riveting as watching paint dry. It takes a while to cut through that much steel.
