Well, the only expert crystallographer I ever met -- Dr. Shea Zellweger of Mt. Union College in my hometown -- was completely certifiable, which is probably not a good sign. :)

The man was probably also a certifiable genius by many standards -- he was nuts in that Dr. Emmett Brown, lovably mad sort of way. But you can not tell me that the binary flipstick was invented by anything other than a mind that is seriously warped for any mere terrestrial purpose. :)

Also, he was a rotten guest lecturer. I think the concept of "eye contact" was the first thing to go once the aliens got to him. :)

I saw the note on the Prisoner's Dilemma in your bio.

Wanna cooperate?

One of my favorite ideas: "Yes, he's a lunatic. But he's the right kind of lunatic.".

...because the nature of things is that they're complex.

Of course. When you put Avogadro's number of them together you'd expect that.

But while that many particles working together makes sense, a small part of it, a few unit cells, makes my brain itch.

Geez. It's literally like not being able to understand Mom's wallpaper.
