dude, the last paragraph is so true. I often think this to myself and desperatly try to find a scenario that disproves it. But funny thing is, there is none
You know when u define self-interest broad enough yes i can cover a large range of things, for instance u can say, because im sure there are times that people have been tortured to death verses betraying someone else(someone else or something or some ideal, whatever its happend) you can say that the action was in their self interest in that they could not live with themselves afterwards but hell, a life of useless miserable pathetic shame is still a life verses hours, days, weeks, months of torture before their inevitable death. I mean self-interest must be stratified, u cant say that living up to your ideals gets ranked higher in self interests than your life
If you care enough to suffer that much torture just so you don't BETRAY someone, how would you feel after commiting the betrayal? You would never be able to face this person again
( ... )
I can think of no such situation. Effectively, you're saying how do we choose when choices are equal? Choices are never equal. Something always tips the balance, even if it's something as simple as picking a blue pen over a black pen because you like blue better, even if both function perfectly.
