The First Death: Hello, how are you, where am I?

Dec 14, 2009 00:08

[A very unusual-looking young woman frowns on the video feed. Her hair is almost pure white, except for one pitch black streak running through it, but her clothes are gray, and almost boring. She's decided this odd device is the most unusual feature of her surroundings, right this moment, trying to figure it out. Not an easy task, for someone who ( Read more... )

powered by magic, far from home, what on the disc is this?

The disc? I can think of no country that refers to their locale as a disc.

This city is Adstringendum. Several scientists failed at an attempt to... learn more about their world, and as a result created this, a merging point for worlds, if you will.

[The thing, it speaks! Alright, she'll reassess this as...] ...a message relaying device?

Ah, no, the Discworld. It has countries on it. Sto Lat, for example?

...oh, dear. And has no one tried fixing it?

Yes. A PCD.

Fascinating. I have never heard of Sto Lat, though I would care to. That is your country?

Several have. Few right away enjoy the place when they come, all struggle with it. A way out has not yet been found.

I see. And that stands for...?

Yes. I'm... from a duchy there, called Sto Helit. It's a lovely place, if you don't mind cabbages.

I see. That makes things problematic, though I do believe I've been in worse situations before.

[Edward blinks as he looks at the screen. It's still on the ground when he dropped it and has been having considerable trouble picking it back up again.]

Um...hello?

[He taps the screen with his bladed finger.]

[Blades for hands. Well, she's seen weirder. Well, okay, she's actually seen something interestingly similar recently, actually.]

Hello.

...Sorry, you don't go by the name the Scissorman by any chance, do you? Because I have to inform you that, if you do, I never sucked my thumb as a child.

Um....no. My name is Edward.

[He's uncertain what thumbs had to do with anything at this point and shrugs it off.]

Well then, it's very nice to meet you, Edward.

You wouldn't happen to know how to get home, would you?

Nowhere on any disc I bet.

Apparently I'm not on the Discworld anymore, no. Most unusual. It doesn't seem to be a proper side-dimension either like... some places I know of.

Hmm~? Like what place?

A few different ones.

The Hogfather's Castle of Bones, for example, or the countries of the tooth Fairy or Death. those are a fair sight easier to get out of, at the least.

I... have not seen any disks around. If I do, I shall let you know.

Well, I should hope not. It is very difficult to see the Disc itself proper without special methods. Might as well talk about meeting the Great A'Tuin around the corner.

Besides all that, it seems I'm no longer on the Discworld anyway, so it's a bit of a moot point, I suppose.

...Great A'Tuin?

The definition of "special methods" vary from world to world. And with the amount of ...odd things the Animus concoct, it might be possible.

...The great turtle, upon whose back stand four elephants who support the Discworld, floating through space.

And I suppose it's possible, but it doesn't seem the Disc, the turtle, or his attendant elephants are, in point of fact, present. If these 'Animus' were to conjure that up, I would begin to think about being impressed. Maybe.

Yes, at home, we have devices... about this size, they're very new-fangled. Apparently they're powered by a very small imp, like the less accurate, but unfortunately more fashionable, watches back home.

Certainly fewer blinking lights.

Ah, I don't think there are imps inside of these...spirits called the Animus do speak over them from time to time, but they're more like...a cellular phone with video.

['Cellular phone' means nothing to her, sorry small wizard. But she seems to connect them with what Carmen has told her, about communication devices] Yes, a message relaying device, with, apparently, audio-visual capabilities. It's actually pretty fascinating.

Ah, excuse me. I'm Susan, and you are? And who are these Animus?
