Don't know much about glutin (as you know), but in DC you can get killer caiprinha drinks. In Adams-Morgan, on Wyoming between Columbia and 19th, there is a bitching place that has delicious Brazilian food and caiprinha drinks that will slay you every time. So, I think the basic ingredients must be available stateside, or at least somewhere in DC. There's some ecological values for you. Buy local, drink global. Anyway, sounds like you had big fun on your trip. Cool. Hi to David from me.

That's good to know. I could also check to see if there is a Portuguese speaking presence in my home town yet. I noticed in the Ches. county adult ed classes that there were multiple levels of spanish classes, and one Portuguese class. Don't know if that reflects business travelers to Brazil or brazilians moving there. But where there are language classes, there is probably sugar cane fire water. Worth looking for.

Dermot and I used to go to a Brazilian bar in Rockville and order Caiparinhas, and loved them, when they made them well. Two years ago, when I came down to your Christmas party, I stopped at a liquer store on the way in, and found a Caiparinhas gift set, with Cachaca. We found that we can buy it at our local ABC sote, and I've been experiementing over the past year with the recipe. I've gotten to the point now, where I can make a wicked batch. Sounds like a road trip to Richmond, with a good Brazilain drunken girlfriend visit, is in order.
