One of the top Texas news stories this morning is which position the constitutional change that would permanently prevent same-sex marriage in Texas will have on the statewide ballot (I think "statewide ballot" means "referendum", but I'm not sure) this November. It is going to be question 2 of 8, but some people feel it should be first. This is the kind of thing Texas lawmakers seem to spend a lot of time on (as opposed to a budget for state schools, which still isn't decided even though school started a week ago ( ... )

What I notice is not the lack of progress (North Austin is relatively young and affluent, so everything here is new and modern), but how many people are out of the loop. For example, last week our local NBC news show ran a story about how people can help supply shoes to kids returning to school without even shoes on their feet. I'm sure this kind of poverty exists everywhere, but still, no shoes seems so...Dickensian. That should be a 19th Century problem, not a 21st Century problem.

California allowed same sex marriage for some short time period like a month or week or something and said it was too much to finance as the excuse not to allow it. I've been down to the jollier areas of San Francisco - I'm sure a lot of people would like same sex marriage in that state!

As for things being run down - nope it's nice there and new (earthquakes help this along) but I see a lot of waste with water. They don't have a lot of fresh water but they have very few water restrictions - I'm sure we have more stringent ones. What is disturbing about this is the US built dams that take Mexican water, leaving the Mexicans with deserts.
