Thank you so much for the links. Yeah, gDiapers sound like a good idea - no need for a spatula (just a swish stick). One thing I didn't know (which doesn't apply to me at the moment, though, since Malcolm's 18 months old and eating solids) is that the poop of exclusively breastfed babies is water soluble, so all you have to do is throw the poopy diapers right in the washer as long as you aren't supplementing with formula.
Speaking of Malcolm, sounds like he's up from his morning power nap.
Not that I know anything about cloth diapers other than I once was in them :) but I would suggest trying them out slowly, which I think you are doing. My only slight parallel is trying to use reusable maxi pads since disposable ones are even a bigger problem environmentally than diapers.
The woman who lent me the cloth diapers is going to use reusable maxis when she has the need for them again. I told her about lunapads, but she's already got some from, hmm, Mother Earth or something like that. I'd love to go the resuable maxi route, but they are seriously cost prohibitive for me right now. Definitely something I'm thinking about, though. At least mine go in the green bin for composing (although the city does separate out the plastic parts somehow, which then go into landfill :( )
Yeah, I'm seriously considering making my own. I need to find just the right fabric as lunapads uses what seems like fleece as it washes up really well. I get the organic cotton ones. I'll have to see if I can find the Mother Earth ones. I suggest just getting a sample one of lunapads as they go for $50 or spend $20 for just one pad and only use it a bit as it's a start. I used reusables for years and it saved me a lot of money in the long run but it is expensive to get started sometimes.
I have found cloth diapers almost as easy to use as disposables. I was unable to buy vinyl-backed fabric in Austin when I made our diapers, so we have separate nylon diaper covers. This adds an extra step to redressing Isabel, but it's all part of the routine to her now (she holds out her legs so her feet will slide in the holes). I find that between Isabel learning to feed herself and Erik and my trips to the gym, I am going to do a load of laundry every other day, and adding 6-7 diapers to the bottom of the load doesn't make much of a difference. Since I line-dry, I don't think the diapers are causing us to use any resources that we wouldn't be using anyway

Good to know that one can wash diapers in with regular clothes. I was led to believe otherwise.
After looking for detergents recommended on this site and not finding them (possibly because I live in Canada or maybe because I didn't look hard enough, I purchased a smallish bottle of Simply Clean liquid laundry detergent (made/distributed by a company in Guelph) to try. I currently use 2 different kinds of enviro-friendly laundry soap (one that doesn't dissolve well in cold water and one that does), "soap" being the most important word in this sentence because it is my understanding that a laundry soap might leave build-up on the diapers. I am hoping that the Simply Clean detergent is OK... These aren't my diapers, so I want to return them in good shape!!!
Malcolm and I are probably going to be staying home all day tomorrow, so I think I will start trying the cloth then. I am so excited!!!
I've been using Simply Clean for a while myself (the liquid). You know how my skin is! I have found it really good. I hope Malcolm likes it too and you can get it in places like Zehrs and probably Loblaws so it's easy to find. I also use safe bleach from the same company as it is not harsh or full of nasty stuff.

I'm planning on trying out G-Diapers - a cross between disposable and cloth. Our local Whole Foods sells them. http://www.gdiapers.com/
