I love cloth diapers!!!

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, I spaced out the 8 loaner cloth diapers I have over 2 days. It was awesome. Malcolm usually hates having his diaper changed, but for some reason he is really great if I'm changing him into a cloth diaper. It's wild. On Tuesday night he wore cloth overnight and it was absolutely fine - more than fine, really ( Read more... )

We use these cheap little facecloths that my mom bought me for this purpose. They are pretty small, so in volume I would say they add up to the equivalent of a cushier wipe. I made a solution for them that you keep them in all the time (so they are ready when you need them):

Anti-Fungal Baby Wipes
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vinegar
1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel
1 tablespoon Calendula Oil
2 drops Lavender or Chamomile Oil
2 drops Tea Tree Oil or Grape Seed Extract
Mix in a jar and then pour over wipes. Store extra solution in the fridge.

This one discourages yeast diaper rashes (the vinegar and essential oils discourage yeast growth). You can leave out everything but the water and the aloe vera, though -- it's up to you and your taste.

I haven't used the cloth wipes in a while, though. I got lazy! :-(

Have you thought about making your own? It's easier than you might think, and might save you a bunch of cash. There are usually some for sale used, too, if you check Craigslist and eBay. Good

Ha ha, I meant make your own diapers (not clear from what I typed), but yes, that would require a sewing machine and probably some experience. ;-)

I'm pretty sure my mother got the little cloths at a dollar store. They come in bundles of six or eight, and I'm sure they are very cheap. They are only about 12cm across, but they fit well in the diaper box when you fold them in half.

I've also heard people suggest just cutting up flannel receiving cloths or old flannel sheets (both of which you should be able to find at a Goodwill or Value Village). Apparently old t-shirts work well too. Hey, have you ever used Freecycle? There's one in Toronto. You could ask the Freecyclers if anyone has an old, ripped, or mismatched flannel sheet they don't need anymore. You'll probably get several.

Ha ha ha ha! Make my own diapers. Ha ha ha ha. As you've correctly assumed, I have only a very minor clue on how to use a sewing machine. I think the last time I used one I was 13 years old, so... I might be capable of making cloth wipes (i.e., sewing edges around a couple of squares), but I see that I can buy what look like nice ones for relatively cheap, so I think I'll go that route. My mother did give me some old terry that would have been perfect EXCEPT for the fact that it will go all stringy when I wash it.

I've purchased (online) 2 new cloth diapers (+ nighttime inserts + a pail liner) and I'm going to check out some used (very used, it sounds like) cloth diapers ($9 each - cheap!) when I'm in Oakville next week. I hope to buy cloth wipes from the Burlington vendor (www.forbabywithlove.ca) then. BUT I'll probably also go the dollar store route for wipes. My mother has some nice facecloths from there that would probably work well.

Cloth diapering - whee!
