At the risk of offending many

Just to preface this post: I wrote this during the summer. I was originally going to post it on my LJ then, but I refrained because of the rather incendiary nature of the post. However, I've finally decided that it should be posted so I can get it off my chest, so to speak. Just let me say that I wasn't really thinking of anyone in particular ( Read more... )

So, are you saying that Americans are self-absorbed, etc. or that the society is? Because, you know, most of us around here are American's, but I don't think I would go so far as to attribute all of these things to a person simply because of their nationality.

Didn't I say at the beginning of my rant that I was referring to American culture? Now, since people are products of the culture or cultures in which they were raised, it is true that a large portion of Americans are, in fact, self-absorbed and petty. However, there are also quite a few Americans who are not completely self-absorbed. Thank God for that. Otherwise, I would have gone crazy a very early into my permanent residence here.

Well we all know that money is what it's all about. Anyway, I argue that the person who is not self absorbed does not have his priorities straight. As I once told some little baptist man, if you're going to be an absolute altruist you should go ahead and kill yourself. :)

While I share your frustration and disgust, especially coming from a "Christian" college where even they complain about the food in the Caf, I'm only now coming to grips with my bitterness. Or, more appropriately put, overcoming my bitterness. It skyrocketed during college. I hated this disgraceful country and Christendom. One shouldn't use the excuse of being a sinner for the lack of compassion and action either. Still, what can we expect? If we, as selfish humans, wish to look in the mirror every day and put on hundreds of dollars of perfume, cologne, or makeup, just to be adorned by everyone else and feel spiffy, how can we look upon something as "ugly" as a starving bum on the street? Its terrible, but remember, bitterness halts the administering of grace. We must be light in a dark, putrid world, not blend in. Run the race and see if anyone will run with you. Take care brother.
