How the hell do I add friends to this thing?

Damn LJ. Stupid user-unfriendly interface. I'm a computer scientist, for crying out loud.

Of course, I'm actually working in the user interface design industry, and LJ confuses the hell out of me too.

Hah! Your computer classes are useless for this site! I know nothing about computers and it makes perfect sense to me...perhaps thats the point?

Anyhow, just click on someone, and then go to their user info, and click on the button that has a head and a plus sign. I think it's the first one. You could also do it manually by going to "Manage" and then clicking on "Friends".

So inefficient and counter-intuitive. Wouldn't it be easier to have a floating "add to friends" icon beside one's name?
