The AC is fixed!

It would seem my home warranty has paid for itself again...2 years running.  I figured it would be the 50 year old bedroom system that would go down, but no, it was the five year old Ruud.  It was a freak thing.  A wire was sitting against the condenser coil.  The vibration caused the wire to lose its insulation bringing 220 into contact with ( Read more... )

Nothing to be afraid of. It is a gamble, and with most gambles, the house usually wins. I didn't have to pay the first year because our house sellers did. So far I have paid a total of 475 including house call costs and have gotten a total of more than 1000 in service and appliances. I re-upped this year because there is a damn good chance the heat pump won't last much longer and since the replacement system will have to have the new type of freon and the old lines can't be reused because of that, it is likely to be a 3000plus job. My gamble is that this very very old system is going to break before I am down the amount of money it will take to replace it. So far the warranty has been paying for itself with other stuff and so we are ahead in the game. Once the old A/C system breaks, it will no longer be a smart gamble for us to pay for the home warranty. The system would have to last 10 years longer (assuming nothing else breaks) for us to lose the gamble, and I seriously doubt that it will. If you don't have an old home with ( ... )

Glad it's paying off for you guys. My place is newly constructed so I elected to pass on the warranty. I've always read the additional warranties "usually" aren't worth the $$ on a NEW 'item' purchased (i.e. blender, car) so I was hoping it would be the same for a house (or in my case townhouse - I know, no character, but we can't all live in big, beautifully historical homes in BR - dammit) ;-)

My experience with cars has been that the warranted parts last exactly 1 week longer than the warranty.

More the fool he. I would always turn off the breaker first. Odd that the short did not trip it. You may want to look into that.

There were fuses for that unit. The previous owners, in their infinite wisdom, had grounding wires on the fuses so they wouldn't trip. Now, that may beg the question why they had fuses to begin with, but I assure you, Jim, their wisdom far exceeds our poor understanding of the universe, so don't even question!
