The biggest, most magnificent snowstorm I've ever seen

Feb 11, 2010 21:41

By some stroke of luck, one of the cameras was actually in Rockville this week so we were able to take pictures of the snow. Here they are...

Rialian shoveled out the entire block, achieving legendary status in the neighborhood -- here's some of the work he did:

I was so glad we found a camera to use today! I've never seen anything like that before, and I may never see it again.

No kidding! They make your house look very fairy taleish.

They really do. When I first saw them, my first random thought was, "those are so much prettier than the fake ones people try to make with lights and tinfoil..." I'm hoping they'll cause the water to leak downward instead of back toward the house, so I'm leaving them there as long as they want to stay...

So I guess this means that he is well on his way to having a "situation"(http://chichi212.com/files/2009/12/mike-the-situation-306x460.jpg) and knowing his way to the "gun show"(http://www.wweek.com/photos/3432/large/11131.jpg).

Just be careful if he ever travels north. If he makes it to the Jersey shore, we might not ever hear from him again.

The Jersey shore will have to fight our neighbors for him -- in addition to shoveling the entire block's sidewalk, he also shoveled several neighbors' driveways and front walks, and dug out an old lady's car. Then afterward, he made some snow art by the back gate.

Wow, those are the best icicles I've ever seen. Great pics!

Wah, the entire country has glorious snow past the boot-tops, and we have zilch. Not even that much on the mountains, which doesn't bode well for this summer's water supply. Back in early December we had one little snow-fall; about an inch stuck, for about five hours. Phooey.

It is blowing a gale, though, and it's pretty cold out, so... I have hopes.

Anyway, have a wonderful time in your romping in it! Looks like Rialian has already been having plenty of fun with the stuff. But, uh, where's the snow-fort? With that much snow, you guys could build a mighty snow castle that would last a month after everything else has melted. Yay Snow!!!

There is one, right by the back gate. We just got pictures of it but I haven't put them up yet. He took all the snow that he shoveled from the driveway and put it in two sculpted piles, one on either side of the gate. Then on top of each of those he made some weird sculptures... There will be pics soon.

Huh.

I hear this is unusual where you live.

Not often, but it does happen once every several years. The last one was in 2003, I think. There was also one in 1999 from what I've heard, though I don't remember that one very well. I do remember a big one in 1979, when our beagle stepped out onto the snow's surface and fell in... Only the tip of his nose poked out (so it must have been at least a couple of feet.)

Although those were some pretty big snowfalls, there has never one over 3 feet of snow in the area that I can remember.

It was. The icicles are still there, too - they haven't gone anywhere. They just keep getting bigger...
