Hah, I know. I was expecting half a chapter at least, after all that.
McClaggan isn't in OotP - s/he's some new character in book 6 (I'm guessing it's a Quidditch player or somesuch). JKR used the name as an example of a random one she heard in passing and decided to use in a book. If you look in her site, in the news section (I think), you should find a full transcript of the interview. It's from her Edinburgh book reading a few days ago :)
I was convinced HBP was Tom too, until she said it wasn't. Now my (unlikely and rather daft) pet theory is Merlin *clings to theory stubbornly* :D
I do not think like most of you, actually. I remember JK Rowling saying that Hermione would be an animagus, and that her animal was JK's favorite animal. This description fully identifies itself with a cat! maybe Harry sees her as a 'he' because well, he saw a cat. And then he discovers it is Hermione! What do you think?
I didn't know JKR said Hermione would become an animagus, that's quite interesting *g* Anyway, yes, I think the description in this snippet is very cat-like. But the fact that the person is wearing glasses still makes me think it's a man :) You never know though.

Hah. Maybe it's Moody's grandfather O.o
Hmpf. Sounds too old to be the HBP to me (is still convinced that Tom is the HBP).
And erm.. who is McClaggan again? -vows to reread OOTP-
