No more snow at lake level. The lake is cold! Perhaps just a tad warmer than Lola Montez was last week. A hot day though. One person canceled because of possible thunder showers. We just had some in Reno over the last few minutes. It hasn't cooled things down much.

Fourteen of us. Quite a good turnout and quite an adventure. It's the end of July and snow covers most of the last quarter-mile of the trail. But the adventure began with crossing Castle Creek at the start of the hike. No rocks or logs are exposed to use so we had to go barefoot throught he water. Run-of-the-mill pics from Loch Leven. Fairly uneventful hike. Around ten people expressed an interest but there were five of us. A couple of patches of snow on the trail at the top, but I've been through worse. It might even clear up by next week now that the weather is supposed to heat up again. The coolest thing this time was a deer ran across the trail right in front of me as I was heading back down. As I recall I was between Grass Lake and Jamison Falls. I was hoping to get a picture. As I walked a few more steps I saw the deer above me but it ran away as soon as it saw me. The snow on this hike suggests that Loch Leven next week might ( Read more... )

Another hike with the other hiking group. This was about five miles round trip, though I added another half mile to go up to Lily Lake. There wasn't much of a swimming opportunity. This is in the Gray Eagle Lodge area, or around Gold Lake and Long Lake. You can get to Smith Lake from this area, though that hike is shorter from Jamison Mine. We ( Read more... )
