ipods

I am thinking of buying an ipod - which one should I get? useful experiences/recommendations/thoughts? I have not had one before so this is all new; cheaper obviously better but I'm not particularly stingy about it, and happy to pay more if it's worth doing so.

I have the 80Gb Video iPod (purchased in September 2006) and I love it, mostly because I haven't yet managed to use up all the space, and it works wonderfully as a portable back-up hard drive.

I'd suggest foregoing the ipod altogether and getting a different brand of MP3 player if you are not a mac user. I really like my Creative Zen. Creative doesn't have the marketing geniuses like Apple, but it's products are a lot better than their presentation would suggest and DEFINATELY more solid than an ipod. Ipods are overrated and over-priced ( ... )

Thanks for your input - I did go for an ipod in the end, but then I have a MacBook in any case so it seemed to make sense.

I would vote in favor of the iPod. I've heard stories of iPod malfunction, but I myself have never experienced it. I've had two, the first lasting me over three years without any serious problems (and, now in the care of my mother, it's still chugging along). If you buy directly from Apple, there's a warranty included, in any case.
If you're not anticipating using it as a backup storage device or carrying around a large amount of music, consider the nano. It holds only 8 gigs, but it's significantly cheaper than the "Classic" model, the next step up.
Yes, using an iPod means downloading the iTunes software, but there are worse programs out there. Do you use a Mac or a PC?

Thanks. I went for an ipod nano as you suggested; I'm already a MacBook person so the software was straightforward. It's tiny but very pretty and wasn't too expensive (I bought direct from Apple). Thanks for your advice.

By all means, I shall add you back. I'm afraid I don't write much about Sanskrit, though it remains rather a passion. Are you studying it? How did your interest arise?

I share many of your language interests, and have noticed you on a_a. I've added you, if that's okay.

Added back! I don't post very often, though a bit more than it looks like as nearly everything is friend-locked. I'm quite active in other ways though (communities etc).
