I think my biggest complaint about this episode was Gandhi being Sam's hero. It was very random and felt like he was picked so it could be joked about. I think there are a better options for Sam's hero. And then it looked like John was Dean's hero, even after all the eye-opening not-in-a-good-way revelations Dean had had in seasons 3 & 4.
The premise of the the boys' heroes threw the episode off for me. The actual dialog between the boys was certainly deep enough to satisfy.
And that whole character development thing? Double-edged sword. It's awesome how they have changed, realistic, makes the show special. But sad, too, because early boys were so much fun. Wondering how it will feel after the first few new episodes...
Oh yeah, I suppose I didn't talk about the heroes...but I agree with you. I think Dean idolized his dad for years, but in the end he's come to understand him as the faulted, accidentally neglectful, human that he actually was. Dean still loves his father, and probably wishes that he could live up to his expectations though - so, that's SOMETHING. But yeah, as for Dean's ULTIMATE hero, I don't think John qualifies
( ... )
It's still one of my least favorite episodes ever. I just tend to forget it exists.
>>I love the fact that Sam is like the least-likely person ever to go darkside...besides his anger-issues and tendency to become a crazy person whenever his brother dies.
To be fair, Dean dies so often that as weaknesses go, it's like getting angry for the hulk ;)
>>Dean on the phone: "Maybe the apocalypse has got them all hot and bothered...yeah, well we all know whose fault that is...well I'm sorry but it's true."
That conversation bit still frustrates me! There's no way Bobby could have gotten two words in during that spiel. Honest to god, when I first saw it, I was half convinced it was that old sitcom trope, and the phone was about to ring.

LOL! Oh man, that would have been so much better.
I'm glad I'm not the only one completely frustrated by that bit. Much like you, I tend to forget it exists - except you know, on rewatches when I am forced to acknowledge it.
"Do not kill my brother. You will not like me when you kill my brother! SAM SMASH!"
Indeed...as you can tell, the phone call makes me angry too. I'm always loathe to ascribe it to the writers messing up and writing something ooc, but...in this case...it's really hard to see if as anything else. I can try to justify it in my own brain though.
And you actually do a good job with that. I like the idea of Sam misinterpreting but Dean not correcting him because he WANTs to hurt him. I once said something pretty cruel to my bestfriend because he had just accidentally hurt my feelings...so I wanted to hurt him back. Sadly, him accidentally hurting my feelings was a temporary hurt, but what I said to him ended up ruining a friendship for about 4 years. Lesson learned: don't be petty.
They DO reuse actors...so you could be right about that dude...actually, I'm going to look him up..YUP! You are right. Same dude. Also, the guy in the Teddy bear suit in S4 was on the show before too...though, you'd never know it :P
This is why I like this show, because the characters CHANGE. I know a lot of people are like "bring back S1 Sam and Dean, they were happy-go-lucky and full of piss and vinegar!" But personally, if I were watching a show where the core relationship that drove the show NEVER EVOLVED OR CHANGED...well, I wouldn't be watching that show, would I. A-MEN! i've been saying this since... S2, i think. cause, y'know, most of the fandom wants to have static S1 Dean and Sam. *yawn*
That phone call from Bobby to Dean kinda threw me off too. I remember when he kinda blames Sam for the Apocalypse, the scene in 4x16 flashed through my mind; the one where he asked Cas if he started the Apocalypse from the hospital bed. It's OOC for Dean to start blaming Sam solely when he blamed himself before Sam killed Lilith. Did he switch blame just because he's angry at Sam?
I think Sam speaking Spanish is sexy. :p I was hoping Dean might be picking up a foreign language too, or maybe just pretend to be British for a bit, because Jensen in a British accent is really hot!
I'm still apprehensive about the whole S6 thing. Really. I'm going to watch the episode tomorrow with a pillow in my hands and a prayer in my heart. LOL
Indeed. 4x16=In Character, 5x06=OOC. Dean always blames himself first. Even when Sam screws up, it's not "Sam, why'd you screw up?" it's "Sam, why'd I let you screw up?"
Sam speaking Spanish is VERY sexy. Sadly, I'm not sure we'll ever get a reason for Dean to speak another language or in an accent...though, he does get to say "so desu" in 5x08 (hardly counts though).
I'm also apprehensive about S6, but then I'm apprehensive about everything. The nice thing about the way they did 1-5, is that they really do stand as a unit. So, S6+ is like a sequel that you can take or leave. This evening we'll see if I want to take or leave it...
