Charles released his grip and let the plate sit flat on his lap. The words caught in the back of his throat, and didn't come out as more than a "I -- " for several moments. It surprised himself how difficult it was for him to explain. "I do not understand what you hope to accomplish by having me stay here."

He paused. He wanted Erik to understand he wasn't afraid of his abilities, although he knew he should be. "I am afraid of you."

"I am afraid of you," Charles repeated with an equally measured tone. He tried to remain calm when he was with Erik, not show him that he was afraid. "I am grateful for what you have done for me," he said, he didn't want Erik to think that those things had gone unnoticed, however he was quite cut off from everything else. "But I am afraid of you. I think your reason for bringing me here may not be the right one."
