"... the average viewer who is not occupying their time admiring the justice that is being done to the comic .... will get bored when 3/5ths of the movie goes by without any major plot beat."
That was me. I had never even heard of 'Watchmen' until you made me watch the preview of the movie. At least I had a couple of favorite characters - so it wasn't all bad :o)
Personally, I am a sucker for characters that are well developed within a story so this movie played my strings perfectly. And I never read the source material prior to seeing the movie either.
My take is that the story felt complete and the characters ended up as solid as they could get so I hope the movie doesn't make enough money to convince the execs to pump out sequels and spin-offs. It is what it is and it's great for what it is.

On the plus side, the film is a slave to the comic, which is a good thing for fans who just wanted to see the story done right on screen.
Unfortunately, The film is a slave to the comic, and comics aren't movies. It shows.
