Ariel was published in 1983, so you're probably about right. I think it was fall of 84 for me, although it might have been earlier.
I corresponded regularly with Steve in the late 80s (using a typewriter until I got my Mac Plus!), as a result of sending him a "whatever happened to the other books in the Architect of Sleep series?" letter. He had gotten enough of those over the years that he had made up a pamphlet to send off to people who wrote to ask. The deal was that he and the editor/publisher eventually agreed to disagree on the length of the books and the series and he shelved it (He had Geographer finished and the next book in draft, iirc).
The publisher of Ariel and Architect was Ace Books. I imagine he has the rights to Architect back by now. Maybe I'll wait until after Elegy launches to ask him about the raccoon books again. :) Email is so much faster/easier these days.
I have, thanks. I like Cory's writing very much. I think of Cory as a Toronto writer, even though he lives elsewhere now. He used to work sometimes at Bakka books, which is Toronto's excellent science fiction bookstore (now called Bakka-Phoenix), and I was in there often years ago.
